UKS was registered as a National Organisation within the International Kolping Society during the International Convention at Innsbruck, Austria in 1982. This was five years after the founding of the first Kolping Family of 22 members at Munteme Parish Hoima Catholic Diocese on 4th December 1977 by Rev. Fr. Karl Hartl, M. Afr.

Fr. Karl Hartl served as first National Praeses of Uganda Kolping Society until retirement in 1998. He also played an important role in the establishment of AKA.

As at 31st December 2008, UKS had 10,000 registered members in 295 registered Kolping Families. Thus all the various members in all the Kolping Families constitute the UKS which exists in sixteen (16) dioceses of: Hoima, Fort Portal, Kaseese, Mbarara, Kabaale, Kiyinda Mityana, Kampala, Lira, Soroti, Tororo and Arua with aspiring groups in Lugazi, Gulu, Jinja, Kasana Luwero, Kotido and Moroto. Since its inception, during the period of civil strife in Uganda, UKS has endeavoured to promote the general Kolping mission of making the world a better place to live in, through promotion of membership and the general community to live as true Christians responsible for society through families, church and state.

Organisation and Governance

Uganda Kolping Society is a Lay Catholic Social Movement registered as a Non-Governmental Organisation and as a Company Limitted by Guarantee without shares. It is run and managed under the following structure:-

The National Protector

Is the patron of UKS and official representative of the Society in the Uganda Episcopal Conference. The Rt. Rev. Albert Edward Dr. Baharagate is UKS first National Protector.

The National Convention

This supreme assembly of members' representatives convenes once every two years and after every four years elects the National Board of Directors.

The National Board of Directors

Consists of two appointed and seven elected persons. It normally sits once every three months.

The Executive Board

Handles and regulates day to day affairs through monthly meetings. This consists of 5 members from the Board of Directors, President or Vice President, Praeses, Treasurer, Secretary and the Executive Director.

The National Office Management

Headed by the Executive Director implements policy on a daily basis. This consists of Administration, Finance, Community and Membership Development; National Projects and Technical Services.

The Zonal and Diocesan Organisations

Are formed by the Kolping Families, approved by the Board of Directors and confirmed by the National Convention where and when deemed fitting.

The Kolping Families

Are formed when at least twenty persons from twenty different and distinct natural families come together for the purpose.
